Introducing Alexandria Drake!

Hi!! So it’s been a lloonngg time since I’ve updated this little part of the internet. If you saw my Instagram post last night you know that things are a little different around here. Ok, everything is different. SURPRISE!

Side note: I’m not going to lie to you, I’m a little nervous about re-launching my little piece of the Internet. But let’s jump in…

I hope you’ve browsed around and gotten to know the new site a little better. You’ll notice that not only did I do a re-design I did a re-brand. This space has gone from A Modern Girl’s Travels to Alexandria Drake. Typing that out made me a little sad, but I think it’s for the best.

Why I Took A Much Needed Break

The last time I posted on the site was seven months ago. It was November and I was writing 4 or more sponsored post a week while also working my freelance social media side job. I would pour as much time as I could into my sponsored posts because I wanted them to be as genuine and authentic as possible. But slowly, with every new sponsored piece, I was losing the ability to be creative and write for myself. I was becoming overbooked, extremely overwhelmed, and I eventually felt very uninspired.

The next straw came when I was out with my family spending some time together and I realized that they had been having a whole conversation for 30 minutes before I even looked up from my phone. Social media had overtaken my life and I didn’t even enjoy it anymore. It was time to take a break. Fast-forward seven months and I’m coming back a whole new me!

Saying Goodbye to A Modern Girl’s Travels

You see, when I started blogging it was literally a spur of the moment decision; just a fun little hobby. I spent hours and hours after work every day researching how to build a community, how to grow my social media presence, and I poured through hundreds of articles… and, in a nutshell, they all told me one thing; I needed to find my niche.

You see, in the beginning, I was writing articles that ranged from how to decorate your first apartment after college, ways to navigate a new marriage, and sprinkled in between, I would write about my adventures through travel.

The travel articles seemed to do the best, so I decided that my niche was going to be travel and that I would become a travel blogger. It seemed perfect at the time. Edward and I were in the middle of trying to find a way to move our lives abroad and experience the expat life for a few years. We were going on quite a few trips a year and I figured I would have enough content to fill this little space with tales of our great adventures. However, as you know… life rarely ever turns out as you plan.

We found ourselves heading into masters programs and changing jobs, we moved around a lot and got restless and just wanted to settle down somewhere, then we started talking kids. Basically, we had no idea what we wanted to do with our lives. We were a little fickle, but that’s what your 20’s are for.

Basically, travel no longer became the most important part of my life and I felt it hard to keep A Modern Girl’s Travels going. It was hard to come up with fresh weekly articles about travel when, well, when we weren’t traveling as much anymore. I felt disconnected and I wanted to be able to connect with all of you on a different level (p.s. you can read more about this on the brand spanking new about me page).

The next obvious step was a re-brand. For months I brainstormed and bounced ideas off of every person I thought would care. There was talk about turning A Modern Girl’s Travels into a public blog with submissions from female travelers around the world. I had it all planned out, built submission pages and wrote up guidelines. I poured hours into new social media strategies. It came time to re-launch the site to the public and I found myself unexcited and I realized it was because this “solution” wasn’t going to fix my dilemma of feeling disconnected from everything I had built.

So, I thought. Well, maybe I can just keep A Modern Girl’s Travels as a public submission blog and then I could start my own little blog on the side? It took me all of two seconds to realize that wouldn’t work. I was already feeling overworked and overwhelmed and my brilliant idea was to sort through submission and edit photos for A Modern Girl’s Travels while trying to start a new blog and work? Ha!

No way that was going to work for more than a month. So it was back to square one. I decided I wanted this space to be a place that I could speak with you openly, genuinely, and freely about any topic that my little heart desired. That’s when Alexandria Drake was born.

What’s In Store For The Future?

I want for this little space on the internet to become an authentic place to escape your busy day and have a one on one conversation with someone. I believe that life should be fulfilling and inspirational. That being said, from this point forward you’ll find articles ranging from everyday life, mental health issues, recipes I tried and loved, a new wellness technique you should add to your routine and a few travel guides sprinkled in. Basically, it’s a whole new me and I’m excited to start this journey with you.

I’m glad you’ve come back to it and in a way that will make you happier! I think that’s really what it’s all about. I totally get what you mean about feeling like you had to base it on travel even though your personal priorities had changed. The new design looks great!

Congratulations on the re-launch. We all need a breath of fresh air once in a while. It happened to me as well. I guess I realized that we all change and with that our blogs as well. The site looks sleek!

Thank you my love! I am so glad you like it and your kind remarks have meant so much! We grow and change as people and if we can’t share that on our own blogs then what’s the point?

I know exactly how you’re feeling. I’m in the middle of a blogging break myself and when I come back later this summer I plan to have a whole new design/branding too. I’m in a limbo right now and it’s very frustrating. But I’m hoping to recenter myself and my blog and get back to blogging about the things I care about!

I love your new site though! It looks great! 🙂
