Home Remodel: A Bathroom Renovation

I might have mentioned a million times that we are attempting to renovate our little cabin in the woods and I think I’ve also mentioned that Edward is not all that handy! So, needless to say, when he randomly started chipping all the tile off the bathroom wall I knew things weren’t going to end well. One wall of cream 60s tile gone only to find… black mold. But, that’s where all the renovations ended. So, as of three months ago, every time I go pee, I sit there, and look at a deconstructed wall and get irrationally upset each and every time.

I could deal with one wall being gone, BUT… it’s not just that! The wallpaper is coming up in bubbles everywhere, the house is old and crooked so the bathroom closet door creaks and gets stuck every time we open it, the seashell patter sink holds water and a few hours after cleaning it, there’s already pink mold growing in the crevices! Also, the linoleum flooring is coming up, the calking in the shower is a hot mess… and did I mention that our only bathroom at the moment is less than 40 square feet (counting the tub)! AHHHHH!!

I am a firm believer that separate bathrooms is the key to a happy marriage. I couldn’t stand sharing our old 150 square feet bathroom and now we have to brush our teeth in shifts; It’s the worst. But I have complained enough and now it’s just time for us to quit being lazy and actually start the renovations. So, in an effort to get the remodel started I have made an inspiration board of exactly what I’m looking for.

Because we don’t have a lot of space, I want to incorporate some light colors to make the space look bigger and brighter. In all of the research I’ve done for decorating small bathrooms, everyone suggests having a glass sliding door, however, the estimated cost would be between 1.2k -2k. That’s just not in the budget… So I’ve been trying to come up with other ideas, which sucks, because our only window in the whole room is in the shower. When the curtain is closed, it get dark and dreary, however, I hate having the curtain open! What am I going to do?! AHHH! If you have any ideas or advice I’d love to hear them!

Remodel To-Do List

  1. We also don’t have a large space for a big vanity so I have been trying to find one that is small while still offering plenty of storage space. So far these two are the contenders (one and two).
  2. Another potential project would be adding wall pockets in the shower so we can have space to put our products.
  3. As far as our bathroom storage closet, we are going to add in a few more shelves and possibly put a laundry shoot in the floor. We have a spiraling wrought iron staircase that leads to the second floor and it’s not at all convenient to have to carry anything down those stairs. I’ve already fallen like five times.
  4. Before Edward destroyed the wall, we had a heater built into the wall to help warm up the bathroom in the winter months. I NEVER used it because, well, I hate the heat and I was also sure it was going to catch the house on fire. I was always seeming to throw my clothes right on top of it. So we took it out and have been considering heated floors. We’ll see if I’m willing to put it in the budget.
  5. Decided on the color to paint the walls. We are doing white tile throughout so I would like to add some color to the room, but I still want it to be light. I considered a light grey, however, that’s the pallet we used throughout the house and I wanted the bathroom to have a little pop of color. I thought about blush… but that may be too girly for Edward. Any ideas?
  6. I’m excited to buy a few new and fresh pieces to decorate the room!

If you have any advice for me I’d love to hear from you. Be sure to follow me on Bloglovin’ so you can keep up to date with the renovation process!

I love subway tile and the hexagon tile for the floor! What a beautiful mood board, and I hope the renovation goes well! My parents did a light yellow in their bathroom and it really looks nice! It’s not too girly and still keeps the space bright!

Me too! I am having a hard time deciding between the two patterns. I hope it goes well too. I had a yellow kitchen at one of our apartments and I loved it. It would be a great option to add a pop of color.

Thank you! It was my first time messing around with Photoshop and I almost gave up but once I figured it out I fell in love. I have a feeling I’ll be making inspiration boards all the time now!

Thank you… I had so much fun looking for inspiration and color pallets! I’m hoping we can put in a new bathroom in the basement.

Kristen from The Road to Domes

I completely understand having to live in an seudo renovated house. My parent’s place is still and has been under renovation for 13 years now. It’s so frustrating having to wait to get to work, especially when you have so many ideas bouncing throughout your head of how you want it to look! I can’t wait to hear about it when it’s all finished!

Look at Ikea for some storage options! They give some great ideas. I just found an apartment in Hamburg with the Prince (yay!). It is super limited on space though so I’ve been stalking Ikea!!!

    Allie A Modern Girl's Travel

Awww YAY! Are you going to do a post on your new place so I can live vicariously through you?? Please do! I love Ikea. Edward and I are planning a road trip to the closest one soon… I’ve been making a want list for weeks now.

Katy Bateman

I love that first bathroom! It reminds me of what I want my clients kitchen will end up looking like

These bathrooms are so perfect

Separate bathrooms would be the dream! Good luck with the remodel, I’m sure it’s overwhelming but it looks like you have great taste. Those bathrooms pictured are gorgeous!

Roxy Crenshaw

This sounds like a fun project! I’m willing to share the bathroom so long as there are two sinks…and another toilet somewhere in the house. Your insp pictures are super gorgeous and I hope your bathroom comes out like those!

    Allie A Modern Girl's Travel

Thank you, I’m glad you liked to inspo. We are looking at eventually building a second bathroom in the basement! Then we’ll just have to fight about which one has to use it.

Maegan Clark

I feel your pain! We’re looking at buying a house now and I’ve watched so much Fixer Upper on TV lately that I think I can just tear down walls myself and put in tile. Clearly I need to stop watching so many shows and start getting estimates!

    Allie A Modern Girl's Travel

Ahhh!!! Fixer Upper is a mirage(i can;t think of the right word) it gives you so much unreal hope. My husband and I begin watched it when we found out we would be moving into this house. It lies.. we are not at all the talented or have the funds to pull off those types of renovations.

Jessica Hughes

So cute! You are rocking the renovation…

Carmen

I love all of your inspiration pictures! Actually, I have pinned some of these images before. Renovating can be stressful, but not renovating (especially when you know you have to) can be very frustrating. Go for it girl and let us know how things turn out! 😉 I love your site, btw! I will be following through blog lovin. We have similar tastes when it comes to our websites and decorating our homes! 🙂

It’s so stressful! I will be doing in depth articles once the process officially begins! I’m so glad to have you following along! I see that we have the same blog design! We do have the same taste..I can’t wait to stalk through your site.

      Carmen

Tell me about it! I’ve been also thinking about doing a blog post of my kitchen reno once it’s complete. Oh, and have you noticed we also use the same font? How crazy is that! Lol

Kusum @sveetesKapes

Decorating the house is so exciting! What great choices, love them. Good luck with the remodel, I am sure its not easy.

Ruthie Ridley

Oh my gosh!!! I would love to remodel! Love the inspo with the round mirror!

    Allie A Modern Girl's Travel

If you do remodel my piece of obvious advice would be to plan one room at a time! My husband started destructing every room at once.

Chrissa - Physical Kitchness

LOL – bathrooms ARE the key to a happy marriage. Once we got two sinks, life was GOOD. Love all your inspiration! Good luck on the remodel!

Kari Guastella

I always enjoy lighter rooms. They just really open up the room!

Love your inspo board! We just got done with a bathroom renovation and are now onto a kitchen renovation and then the basement! It’s a busy year!

    Allie A Modern Girl's Travel

Thank you! How did the bathroom turn out? Was it difficult? We haven’t even talked about renovating the basement yet… the first floor is giving me enough troubles! Good luck on your reno.

EasycookingwithMolly

I love lighter colored rooms and white/soft pink is one of my weakness. Very inspiring pictures.

Emily of Em Busy Living

Oh gosh…have you guys dealt with the mold problem? I got very sick last fall because of some hidden mold in the bathroom at my in-laws’, and man what a mess to clean it up! The worst!

Leslie Rossi

the scalloped tiles are my fav, i really love that look.
